Adoration is the first attitude of man acknowledging that he is a creature before his Creator. It exalts the greatness of the Lord who made us and the almighty power of the Savior who sets us free from evil. Adoration is homage of the spirit to the “King of Glory,”respectful silence in the presence of the “ever greater” God. Adoration of the thrice-holy and sovereign God of love blends with humility and gives assurance to our supplications.” (CCC 2628)
When you hear a Catholic saying "Are you going to Adoration?" it's short for Eucharistic Adoration. Eucharistic Adoration is when a blessed host has been placed in a monstrance like the one pictured on the left. The monstrance is then placed on the alter for everyone to pray in the presence of Christ.
First thing is to enter the sanctuary in a attitude of respect. You are walking into a room where Christ is present. Be as quiet as possible and turn off the volume on your cell phone. Be mindful of others. If you are bringing your children (which is highly encouraged) instruct them on what is expected before you come. Before you enter the pew, you should genuflect on both knees (if possible) as a sign of respect to the presence of Christ.
At this point, you can kneel, sit, or go up to the kneelers that are in front of the alter. You can pray, say the rosary, read scripture or a relgious book, or just be present. Say prayers of thanksgiving for the blessings you have been give or express sorrow for your sins. It's totally up to you.
Don't think of Adoration as another commitment that has to be crossed off your list for the week. Think of it as spending time with your best friend who has been anxiously anticipating your visit. Tell him what has been on your mind and what kept you awake last night. It's a conversation, take a turn listening because friends listen to one another.
Eucharistic Adoration at MMOC is held Wednesdays from 9 AM to 8 PM and first Fridays 9AM to Noon during the summer. If these times don't work for your schedule, check out other parishes in the area that may have times that work better for you.
There's no set amount of time you have to spend at Adoration. Spend 15 minutes during your lunch break, while you are out running errands or for an hour after work.
There is no perfect way or perfect amount of time for Adoration. Stop in and spend some time in the presence of Christ. It's a wonderful way to develop a better and deeper relationship with Christ.
